Cardboard Box City 2020

April 24

What is it?

Cardboard Box City is a homeless awareness event focused on educating youth on the realities of homelessness and sharing how Family Promise serves homeless families in our community, while also raising funds for our program to help families in this type of crisis. Cardboard Box City is an OUTDOOR event. It is an afternoon, evening, and overnight "camp out style" event, where participants bring and design a CARDBOARD BOX to sleep in overnight, braving the elements, and remembering our homeless children and their families.

We have contests for the best box creations, the most money raised and the best slogan created. Dinner will consist of a soup line, plus there will be music and games provided. We have added CARS to the event for those who would prefer to sleep overnight in their cars.

Who can participate?

ANYONE! This event is fun for everyone. Cardboard Box City is a rewarding and exciting opportunity. Youth become aware of the homeless population that surrounds them and the many ways that all of us can serve our neighbors in need. Your paticipation in this event helps make this growth happen. We encourage you to be generous with your time. Middle and high school students are ENCOURAGED to participate. We also encourage families, clubs, youth groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, college students. sports teams, community organizations, and businesses.

What is "Houses for Change?"
Family Promise of Cape May County is holding an ART PROJECT from now through April 24, aligning it with Cardboard Box City to help homeless families in Cape May County. The project is called HOUSES FOR CHANGE and is meant to raise awareness of homelessness by raising funds through a fun, educational art project for ages K–3 and 4-6 grades through school and Sunday School classes.

We supply the small house-shaped cardboard boxes. Using art supplies, the children will decorate them, then take the boxes home, and in the following weeks fill them with change. The boxes also come with an age-appropriate lesson plan for students K-3 and 4–6 to teach kids the values of compassion, charity and saving values.

On April 24, the children will bring their filled boxes to the Cardboard Box City event at the Lighthouse Church where they will be recognized for their participation. To order boxes, and lesson plans, call

609-846-7862 EXT. 9

Everyone is welcome to participate, either by bringing the cardboard box houses filled with change to the event or by creating a cardboard home to sleep in overnight to raise awareness.

Adding to Cardboard Box City this year is “Houses for Change”
